The largest penguin, the Emperor, lives exclusively in Antarctica.  Unlike other penguins which only come to Antarctica in the Summer, the Emperor stays in Antarctica through the bitterly cold winters.  Many of their colonies are on sea ice rather than land, so when Summer comes, the “land” under the colony literally dissolves.

In November of 2006 we set off on an ice breaker to see these marvelous creatures.
