Adult King Penguins have dramatic orange-yellow markings on the throat, ears and bill. They are second in height and size to the Emperors. By the time a chick is six weeks old it is half the size and weight of its parents and has moulted to a thick brown down coat.
Located at the Northeast corner of the Falkland Islands, Volunteer Bay is home to the largest colony of King Penguins in the Falklands. We visited this colony on New Years Eve Day in 2000 but we drove over land for 4 hours each way to get there. We didn't even realize that a gorgeous white sand beach was just over the horizon. This time we were fortunate to be the only ship able to land this season. We were out there and back before 9 am. The return to the ship was a challenge because of the increased waves, but it was a great way to test out our waterproof gear as well as understand the term “wet landing”!
Every man wants to celebrate his 57th birthday on a white beach in a red parka with his true love... and of course his video camera!
This was our 2nd visit to this charming capitol of the Falklands and we celebrated Rick’s birthday by having lunch in town. Of course we had beer with fish ‘n’ chips-very British! We saw the Ernest Shackleton on our way out of the port.
